Summary: It was a quintessential August day in Richmond for the 32nd Annual Round Church Women's Run, sunny with temperatures in the 70s for the 8:30am start. The 5k race had its largest turnout in history with 178 finishers and saw two age group records fall. Anne Bliss lowered the masters record, edging under the 20 minute barrier with a time of 19:59.6. That performance placed Anne a close 2nd overall behind 5k race winner Liz Hollenbach's 19:57.5. Molly Peters of Huntington rounded out the award winners with her 3rd place finish clocking 21:00. The other record setting performance of the day came from a newbie to the 80-89 year young age group as Sylvia Weiner crossed the finish line in 38:53. Sylvia now owns the record for the 60-69, 70-79, and 80-89 age groups!
The 10k race saw 111 finishers making 2011 the largest combined turnout in Round Church Run history with 289 women completing the 5k and 10k races. The 10k was won by Abbey Kaknes in 38:39, the fastest winning time since 2005. In similar fashion to the 5k, the 2nd place finisher was also the first masters runner across the line with Kathy Provencher's solid 41:01. Last year's 5k champion, Sarah London, moved up in distance and claimed the 3rd 10k spot with a time of 42:06.
In addition to the great performances of the runners, this year's race saw a few successful organizational changes. Thank you to the Town of Richmond for supporting our race and allowing Cochran Road to be reserved solely for runners for the first time this year. Also, a special thanks to the Round Church and surrounding neighbors for allowing us to move all of our race activities to the church green. Last but not least thank you to all of the volunteers and local businesses who so generously helped with this year's race
