38th Annual Turkey Trot 5k

November 26, 2015
Burlington, VT

Thanksgiving 2015 was a beautiful clear day for the annual GMAA Turkey Trot at UVM, with comfortable temperatures in the 40s, but windy! Runners faced headwinds of 20 mph or more as they headed down the recreation path along Spear St. The field included several runners in fun Thanksgiving costumes, Miss Vermont (Neely Fortune) in her sash, kids, parents, walkers and speedsters. The men’s champion was Adrion Pitman in 16:24, followed by Jonnie Dunne in 16:54 and Jonathan Allard in 17:12.

Katherine Cook and Isabelle Unger crossed the finish line running side-by-side and holding hands in a joint effort to tie for first place among the women in 19:58. Third place went to Margo Smith in 20:44.

Since there was no snow on the playing field next to the starting line, the kids race was held right there at 10:45, rather than on the track.  This meant that the kids had a huge crowd of adult runners on hand to cheer them on.  Much of this crowd participated in a warm-up led by Peak Physical Therapy.  All kids who ran received a finisher’s medal.

With a turnout of 948 runners, the event brought in approximately 1000 pounds of food donations to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, plus $4102 in cash. Race Director Jonathan Sands presented checks totaling that amount to Kelly Saunders of the Food Shelf after the race.  It was quite impressive to see the dozens of large bins fill up with food contributed by runners, and to see how quickly Kelly and her assistant loaded it all up to transport it directly to the Food Shelf. Thank you Kelly!

There are many volunteers to thank for helping make sure that all went very smoothly: James and Haley Beckett, Jan and Harris Abbott, Nora and Alex von Stange, John and Lindsay Spinney, Aaron Hawley, Joe Noonan, Paul Bolychevtsev, Andrew Mack, Deborah Deladurantaye, Colin Dodgson, Jonathan and Gwendolyn Sands, Peggy Owen Sands, Anne Treadwell, Nancy Weber Curth, Joe Noonan, Tessa Valyou, Marc Kutler and Hazel Kreider.
