38th Annual Turkey Trot 5k

November 27, 2014
Burlington, VT

Weather: High twenties’s, mostly sunny, light wind, snow

Summary:  Thanksgiving Day 2014 provided a fresh blanket of snow for the 38th Annual GMAA Turkey Trot at UVM.  A winter storm hit much of New England dumping over 12" of snow in many places.  Burlington was spared the hardest hit with the storm leaving just about 6" of light fluffy snow on the course Thursday morning.  Snowshoe packing of the course helped mark the route and sunny skies melted snow off the paved bike path.  Despite the challenging conditions, 556 adventurous participants turned out to burn some calories and support a great cause!  We thank everyone for the tremendous outpouring of community spirit and generosity.  This years event raised $2654 and 804 pounds of food donations for the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf!

In spite of snow on the course, both the men's and women's top finishers still posted very respectable times.  Brendan Copley of Colchester, Vt crossed the line as the men's winner in a time of 16:45.  Sean Smith of Amherst, Ma was second in 17:26 with Chris Funch of Winooski in third at 18:00.  In the women's race, Summer Spillane of Shelburne, last year's runner up, took home the title in 19:48 followed by a very close race for second and third with Julie Viau of Colchester in 22:08 and Suzy Garrity of Burlington in 22:11.

The Kid's Run 2014 featured a modified course of one snowy lap around four cones in the practice field next to the 5k start/finish line.  Over 30 children packed the starting line in full winter gear and made a rapid dash through the snow to the finishline.  Ribbons were awarded to all as a large snowman looked on from the infield.

Following the 5k run, the annual prize raffle was held in the Gutterson Lobby giving everyone a chance to warm up and enjoy the generous gifts donated from many local businesses.

Raffle prizes were generously donated from: Champlain Orchards, Dan's Chocolates, EatWell Media Group, Healthy Living Market, Vermont Teddy Bear, Clif Bar & Co., Vermont Cheescake Co. and the Ski Rack.

Volunteers:  Anne Treadwell, Jay and Amy Surprenant, Lisa Laramee, Ted and Jean Joslin and Julie Patrick along with her two sons.
