37th Annual Turkey Trot 5k

November 28, 2012
Burlington, VT

Weather: cold, high teen’s, mostly sunny, moderate wind, snow

Summary:  In stark contrast to last year, Thanksgiving Day 2013 provided a very cold morning for the 37th Annual GMAA Turkey Trot at UVM.  Several days of rain, then snow and single digit temperatures overnight made for an icy and snow covered course with wind chills Thursday morning below zero!  Despite the tough conditions, 556 participants ventured out in the cold and braved the elements to burn some calories and support a great cause!  We thank everyone for the tremendous outpouring of community spirit and generosity.   This years event raised $3214 and 692 pounds of food donations for the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf!

Course conditions were a bit slippery, but both the men's and women's winners still managed to post very quick times.  Nick Cooper of Colchester, Vt crossed the line as the men's winner in a time of 17:56, just ahead of Brian Mougeon of Winooski 17:59 with Dereck Schutz of Bolton in third at 18:19.  The women's race was also very close with Aly Millet of Boston breaking the line first in a time of 19:37.  Just on her heels was Sunmer Spillane of Shelburne 19:38 and Liz Hollenbach of Burlington in third 21:11.

The Kid's Run 2013 featured a return to the new course of one blazing lap around the new track at UVM!  Over 40 children packed the starting line in full winter apparel and offered the large crowd of proud parents and friends a glimpse of some rising stars for the future as they raced to the finish line to claim their finisher's ribbons!

Following the run, a prize raffle was held in the Gutterson Lobby giving everyone a chance to thaw out and enjoy the generous gifts donated from many local businesses.
