27th Annual GMAA Kaynor's Sap Run

Summary: A dry spring and recent warm temperatures kept the roads in reasonable shape this year (by Westford standards!) with no snow. Rick Rountree led off the race with Sam Davis, but pulled away about before hitting the first mile by reeling off a blistering 4:58. He increased his lead to almost 2 minutes over the rest of the course to finish in 33:05, the fastest time since 1998. Sam finished in 34:54 and was followed in by Josh Brown in 35:31. Caroline Zeilenga led the women's race in a time of 40:46, the fastest time since 1999. Leslie Myers was never far behind and finished second in 41:23. Cindy New rounded out the top three with a 42:11 finsh. The most notable story of the day was the horses! Near the now repaired bridge that was missing at last year's 30K, a herd of horses escaped their field after most of the runners went by. They quickly made their way towards the frontrunners, even up the steep hill after mile 2. Many runners were inspired by the equines and the their excitement at having so many people to run with. Others mentioned it was Westford's version of the "running of the bulls". The horses were slowly captured and brought back to their farm but one remained elusive, moving up to 10th place by mile 3. Rick's pace was too much for even a horse, and the horse was captured around mile 4 without taking the lead. Thankfully no one was hurt in this memorable event. I believe the area near the Woods Hollow bridge is getting a "reputation" for making GMAA races interesting! The 103 finishers was a new record for the race. The only age group record of the day went to Norm Larson. His time of 35:46 shattered the fifteen year old 50s age group record by more than 3 minutes!
