Summary: Congratulations to all 194 finishers - the most since 1982! 227 registered, 204 started, and 201 made it halfway. The Friday evening snow that made travelling to the race challenging for some spiced up the scenery more than usual - snow capped mountains with fall colors below. Luckily the warm lake kept the snow from accumulating on the island. It was certainly one of the colder races in this marathon's history. The men's race was quite dynamic. Robert Demers opened an early lead and held it for 22 miles. He was always in view of the second place runner and held a 30 second advantage at the halfway mark (1:24:20). Paul Young was in third place at mile 3 and moved into second by mile 7. He was able to hold that position until mile 19. Jack Pilla was in second place at mile 3, before settling into third by mile 7. Jack slowly closed the distance in the second half of the race, overtaking Paul at mile 19, and then Robert at mile 22. He cruised to his first marathon win and became the oldest Green Mountain Marathon winner (48 years old) in a time of 2:54:49. Meanwhile Richard Miranda bided his time running in a pack of three in fourth place for most of the race. His half marathon time was almost four minutes behind the leader. He used a negative split to propel himself into second place by the finish, less than a minute behind Jack (2:55:28). Paul Young settled for third in 2:55:43. Jean-Francois Pouliot also came from behind (7th at the half) to take fourth in 2:57:36. Scott Hardeman rounded out the top five with a 2:57:52. The women's race was also exciting, with most of the activity in the 2-5 spots. Anne Treadwell broke out of the gate to take the lead early and never relinquished. She hit the half in 1:33:28 with a comfortable four minute lead. Only slowing slightly in the second half, she finished in 3:08:48, winning her first marathon, and at the same time bettering her best marathon time by 17 minutes! Her time was the fastest women's time since 2000 and completed the GMAA sweep of the two number one spots. Dot Martin bounced around between second and fourth most of the race, but ended up second when it counted, finishing in 3:14:22. Beth Herder didn't work her way into the top 5 until mile 13, but ran a strong second half and finished third in 3:16:43. Janet Waren ran most of the race in second place, but fell back to fourth in 3:18:10. April Martin, coming off a 3:11 marathon best a few weeks earlier, also bounced among the top 5 during the race. She ultimately finished fifth with a 3:23:36 finish. Only one age group record was set for the day - Bobbi Stapenhorst set the new mark for the women's 60s with a 4:31:30. An analysis of the split times shows 23 runners had a negative split. The most negative split for both time and place went to Richard Dickinson. His 3:20:31 came from a 1:45:41 (good for 69th) followed by a 1:34:50 (good for 9th). Many runners had solid times, including many personal bests and recent bests. While there weren't copious spectators on the course, the ones that were there were very energetic and inspiring. The hot corn chowder was one of the favorite post race foods as was the very appropriate apple products (Grand Isle is sometimes called apple island).
