9th Annual GMAA Green Mountain Island Marathon

Summary: Steve Hubbard of Princeton, NJ won his first marathon ever and set the course record in 2:29:45. John MacKay of Burlington finished 500 yards back in 2:31:15. Peter Garvilla of Pessare, NJ was third in 2:39:59. Steve pulled ahead at mile 8, with John reeling him in at mile 10. The two ran together until mile 15 when Steve pulled away for his final lead. Barbara Kelly of White River won the women's race in 3:07:05 and also set a course record. Kristie Dalbout of Endicott, NY was second in 3:16:53, while Marilyn Frison of Manchester Center placed third in 3:24:35. The team prize was won by host GMAA with a combined time of 11:15:49 (MacKay, Valentine, Kaynor, Williams). Second place went to the Mercer Bucks Running Club of Princeton, NJ (Hubbard, Perrine, Lauder, Machold). Dr. John Bland, 61, was the oldest finisher while Randy Ricard, 14, was the youngest finisher.
Many of the runners commented on the beauty of the course and the availability of aid along the route. Many were impressed by the organization and facilities available to both the runners and their families, and the convenience of the first aid station, food and drink, and showers, within 50 yards of the finish, which many claimed were unfamiliar, but welcome sights to most marathoners.
Absent from Saturday's marathon were some of the GMAA's premier runners. Kurt Lauenstein (2:24) and Peter Millard (2:26) will instead be running among 70 competitors in the World Cup Elite Marathon on 8/26 in Montreal. Both are looking to qualify for the US Olympic Marathon Trials. John Dimick (2:11) has already qualified for the Olympic Trials and is in training for that event.
