39th Annual GMAA Archie Post Five Miler

Race Directors: Mike and Marybeth Early
Summary: It was a warm day for the 104 finishers. The men’s race started out fast with John Severy taking off for a 5:10 first mile. Rick Rountree, Rob Lukaskiewicz, Binney Mitchell, and Sam Davis were all giving chase. By the half way point Rick had pulled away with a 10 second lead and went on for his 2nd Archie Post win in 26:37. John maintained his pace for second and finished with a 27:02 and Rob finished third with 27:35. In the women’s race Carole Hakstian, two time Archie Post winner and course record holder, headed out in the lead at hit mile one about 5:50 a few seconds ahead of Megan Valentine. Megan passed her a half mile later and never looked back, holding a decent lead by the halfway point. Megan went on to record a 32:21 finishing time, 43 seconds ahead of Carole's second place 32:54. Jessica Bolduc finished third in 33:51. Three age group records were set despite the hot sticky weather - Megan Valentine set the new bar for the 20s with her 32:21, Cindy New's 34:04 is the new standard for the 50s, and Betty Lacharite set the standard for the 70s in 55:12 (and in doing so now owns two age group records - 60s and 70s). Micellaneous race facts - Rick Rountree has become the 15th Archie Post repeat winner (8 men and 7 women) and this year's race featured 7 previous winners competing (4 men and 3 women). The second annual kids quarter mile had 10 kids (age 2 to 9) participating and finishing on the AP finish line where they received ribbons. Sarah Eustis was the victor, with a time of just about 2 minutes. Lots of smiles and great efforts from all!
One person missing from this year's race was Persis Post, Archie's wife, who died this past winter at the age of 99. She often attended the race in recent years to cheer on runners and will most certainly be missed by all.
