27th Annual Turkey Trot 5K
November 27, 2003
Sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-40s lured a record 348 participants to the 27th Annual Turkey Trot at UVM in Burlington. Mark Churchill won by 20 seconds with a time of 15:59. Kim Loeffler was the first female finisher in 18:10. Runners ranged in age from 7 to over 70 and hailed from as far away as Georgia and the Czech Republic. David Hershberg, 71, running with his granddaughter, completed his first race since suffering a heart attack in May's Vermont City Marathon! Runners' generous donations to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf totaled $1,031 and 807 pounds of food.
Many thanks to retired race director Ralph Swenson for sharing his
experience and to volunteers Sean Murphy, Matt Czaplinski, Dave Fields
(who helped with registration before trotting off to finish his fourth
year of consecutive GMAA races!), Dick Millar, Charlotte and Jack Treadwell,
and Richard Czaplinski.
