The spring blizzard of 2000 was the toughest competitor at this year's Sap Run. 16 runners managed to keep their cars on the unplowed roads to get to the race, and ran 6.0 miles through heavy snow and winds. 10" of heavy, wet snow was everywhere. Luckily the sugarhouse was large enough to fit all the volunteers and racers for the refreshments after the race. The bonus was that everyone went home with a well deserved survival prize! Many runners and volunteers did not make it past snowy hills and the incredible auto-gobbling mud sinkholes strategically hidden beneath the new snow on Old Stage Road in Westford. Runners complained that the vehicle tracks led them into bad footing, and it was even worse in open areas where the drifts filled in the tracks. Chapin and Donna Kaynor, race directors, offer condolences to those who could not make it. In spite of the conditions, we had a quality race thanks to volunteers Hadley Kaynor and Vandy Kaynor and the hearty souls who managed to show up.
Some special mentions : Eric Ashley ran over from Milton and around the moose on Rogers Road to cheer his brother on. Chip Langmaid, John Valentine and Vandy Kaynor all came far from the east and south (where there was much less snow!).
Race Directors: Chapin and Donna Kaynor
Race conditions: Heavy snow prior to, during, and after
the race (14.3" reported at the Burlington airport), along with a 30 mph
wind from the Northwest and muddy roads that were heavily rutted and not
plowed.
Let's hope for sunshine and 50 degrees for next year!
