Race Directors: Andrea Houlihan, Connie Curtain, Sue McNamara
Summary: The Round Church Women's Run had its most spectacular
turnout ever. In fact the large crowd, 155 participants, surprised the
race directors. But what was even more special was the diversity of the
participants. There were of course the familiar faces of women who run
races regularly, Shari Bashaw, Karen Lang, and Betty Lacharite, to name
a few, with local elite runner Sue McNamra sweeping up the 10K course in
a time of 36:51. But there were also new faces. Eleven junior runners turned
out for the 5K, hopefully a sign of youth interest in the sport. Erin Sullivan,
17 years old, turned in a course record time of 17:32 in the 5K. Quite
a few participants reported that this was their first road race! We also
had Sylvia Weiner of Canada, a 75-time marathoner and holocaust survivor,
who came in as the first place veteran runner. And finally, we welcomed
a visually impaired participant who ran with a guide runner. We're not
sure why the race grew so dramatically this year. Was it the perfect weather?
Did we advertise the race more effectively? Has word finally gotten out
that this is a fun event? Probably a bit of all of the above. Personally
I credit it to having three co-directors rather than just one person going
it alone. Sue McNamara and Connie Curtain joined me this year in directing
the race. I wish I had found them five years ago. They dove in and we divvied
up the work. I could not have had two better partners! We are already planning
how we will accomodate 155+ runners for 1999.
