Summary: It was another year of terrific growth for the Round
Church Women's Run. We celebrated the 20th anniversary with 240 registered
runners. In contrast to the reports of the aging of the running population,
we had many more runners under 19 years of age. The numbers of young runners
were augmented by the Greater Burlington YMCA's very successful program
for young girls aptly called "Run Girl Run". Overall the youngest
runner was 7 and the most senior was 68. There were also many first time
racers. Each year we ask whether in this day and age we need an all-women's
race. It seems that the answer is still YES. For many women participating
in road races is still a foreign and intimidating experience and they feel
that a single sex race will be a little less so. It may be just their feeling
but it is still important. The two all-women's races that the GMAA produces
actively encourage women to give the sport a try; some of these women have
then expressed interest in joining the GMAA thereby strenghtening the club.
